Nigeria Commemorates 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day with Tribute to Sacrificing Soldiers and Calls for Unity

As Nigeria observed the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day on Sunday, the Federal Government and state governors united in paying tribute to the nation’s military personnel for their unwavering service and sacrifices in defending the country’s unity, peace, and territorial integrity.

Throughout the country, both federal and state authorities participated in commemorative activities, holding interdenominational church services to honor the fallen heroes.

This annual observance, held on January 15, recognizes those who lost their lives during Nigeria’s civil war, various internal security operations, and peacekeeping missions abroad. The events serve as platforms for leaders—including governors and defense officials to acknowledge the selfless sacrifices of active, retired, and fallen soldiers, reaffirming their commitment to the welfare of troops and their families.

In Abuja, Senate President Godswill Akpabio paid tribute during a church service, emphasizing that the sacrifices of fallen soldiers form the foundation of Nigeria’s unity, peace, and progress. He assured that the Federal Government and the National Assembly remain dedicated to restoring Nigeria’s status as one of Africa’s most peaceful and secure nations. Represented by Deputy Senate Chief Whip Peter Nwebonyi, Akpabio stated, “The sacrifices we commemorate today strengthen our resolve to build a safer, stronger, and more united Nigeria.”

The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retired), highlighted President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to ensuring the armed forces and security agencies are well-equipped, motivated, and cared for to effectively carry out their duties. Musa praised the President’s leadership, expressing hope that Nigeria would overcome its current challenges. “His actions speak volumes about the value he places on service and sacrifice,” he said.

Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji also lauded the military for their sacrifices, describing them as instrumental in making Nigeria a nation of pride, dignity, and global respect. During a special church service at the Government House Chapel in Ado Ekiti, he commended the soldiers’ resilience and dedication in defending the nation’s territorial integrity amid crises such as banditry, insurgency, and kidnapping.

Governor Oyebanji, represented by Deputy Governor Mrs. Monisade Afuye, emphasized that the day is a time for reflection—reminding Nigerians that peace and freedom are hard-won and paid for with blood, sweat, and sacrifice. He urged all to renew their commitment to patriotism, unity, and peaceful coexistence, urging actions that promote justice, compassion, and love for one another.
