Sagamu LG Orders 14-Day Shop Security Upgrade at Awolowo Market, Moves to Constitute Security Committee
The Executive Chairman of Sagamu Local Government, Jubril Afolabi Odulate, has ordered traders at Awolowo Market to replace weak or wooden shop doors with iron steel doors within 14 days, following rising concerns over burglaries and recent fire incidents in the market.
The directive came after the chairman visited the market alongside members of his cabinet and the Head of Local Government Administration to assess the situation and interact with affected traders.
A follow-up meeting was subsequently held at the Local Government Secretariat with market executives and board members to address the issues and chart a way forward.
At the meeting, stakeholders agreed on immediate security measures, including the installation of stronger shop doors and the constitution of a Security Committee. The committee will be chaired by the Babaloja, Mr. Adubiagbe Babatunde, and is expected to develop and implement strategies to curb criminal activities and improve safety within the market.
The chairman stressed that maintaining security is a shared responsibility, urging traders and stakeholders to remain vigilant and proactive.
He also called for improved transparency, mutual respect, and open communication among market leaders, directing that executive meetings, reportedly inactive since the emergence of new executives, resume immediately.
Following the engagement, market executives convened their first meeting, where members embraced unity and pledged to work together towards peace, safety, and the overall development of Awolowo Market.
