Emefiele Reaffirms Certainty Of January 31st As Deadline For Old Naira Notes
The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele, yesterday declared that the January 31, 2023 deadline fixed by the apex bank for the return of old N200, N500 and N1,000 banknotes would not be extended.
The CBN Governor’s comment came just as the Senate and House of Representatives members urged the banking sector regulator to extend the deadline.
” I must say here that unfortunately, I don’t have good news for those who feel that we should shift the deadline. My apology.
“The reason is that just as the president had said on more than two occasions, and even to people privately, that for us 90 days – in fact, we feel it’s 100 days – is enough for anybody who has money or the old currency to deposit the money in the banks.
“And we took every measure to ensure that all the banks were open or remain still open to receive all old currencies. 100 days we believe is more than adequate.” Emefiele said.
