Nigeria Retain 2028 Olympic Flag Football Hopes Despite World Championship Withdrawal
Nigeria’s men’s and women’s flag football teams remain in contention for qualification for the 2028 Olympic Games despite withdrawing from the 2026 IFAF Flag Football World Championships in Düsseldorf, Germany, over visa issues.
The International Federation of American Football (IFAF), alongside Nigerian sports authorities, confirmed that the teams were unable to secure the required visas in time for the championships, scheduled for August 13–16, 2026.
However, the withdrawal does not eliminate Nigeria’s Olympic qualification chances. Under the approved LA28 qualification system, the teams can compete at the 2027 IFAF Continental Championships, where a top-two finish would earn a place in the Olympic Qualifier Series for the 2028 Games.
Nigeria qualified for the 2026 World Championships after winning both the men’s and women’s titles at the 2025 African Flag Football Championship in Cairo. The teams’ withdrawal means they will miss the opportunity to compete for Olympic quota places at the Düsseldorf event, but their pathway to Los Angeles remains open.
Nigeria’s absence from the 2026 World Championships is a setback, but it does not end the country’s Olympic ambitions. Strong performances at the 2027 Continental Championships could still take both teams into the final qualification stage for LA28.
