Following Saturday’s gas explosion in the Ita-Oshin area of Abeokuta North Local Government Area of Ogun State, Governor Dapo Abiodun has directed the evacuation of residents from affected buildings for integrity tests. During an on-the-spot assessment, he assured residents of the state’s commitment to foot hospital bills for victims and compensate property owners impacted by the incident.

The explosion, which occurred on the Abeokuta-Sango-Lagos Expressway, resulted in one fatality, six injuries, and the destruction of six vehicles. Florence Okpe, spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, confirmed the incident, attributing it to brake failure in a gas tanker that subsequently lost control and collided with the kerb.

Expressing concern over the safety of trucks transporting Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), Governor Abiodun highlighted the need for stringent safety regulations and oversight within the industry. He emphasized the importance of aligning safety measures with the industry’s rapid progression.

In response to the incident, Gasco Marine, the company associated with the gas truck involved, pledged a thorough investigation. The company expressed condolences to the affected families and affirmed its commitment to upholding safety standards across its operations. Emergency response teams, including personnel from various agencies and the Ogun State government, promptly mobilized to the scene to provide assistance.

Abiodun announced plans to convene a meeting with the Petroleum Tanker Drivers Association to address safety concerns surrounding tanker operations in the state. Additionally, he urged the Standards Organisation of Nigeria to ensure that CNG tanks used by trucks meet required safety standards.

As investigations into the incident continue, Gasco Marine reiterated its focus on supporting affected families and maintaining the highest levels of safety. The company vowed to provide updates to stakeholders as the investigation progresses, reaffirming its commitment to the well-being of employees and the communities it serves.
