Ogun Government Urges Residents in Floodplain Areas to Relocate Ahead of Rainy Season
The Ogun State Government has issued a warning to residents living in flood-prone areas, urging them to relocate to safer grounds before the onset of heavy rainfall. This directive comes as part of measures to mitigate the impact of anticipated flooding during the upcoming rainy season.
According to the Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, residents residing in low-lying areas are particularly at risk of flooding, with the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) predicting heavy rainfall from March to December 2024. The forecasted rainfall is expected to affect sixteen out of the twenty local government areas in the state.
Addressing the press during the 2024 Ogun State Flood Alert conference, Commissioner Oresanya emphasized the need for proactive measures to safeguard lives and property. He urged residents to either relocate to safer areas or elevate their homes to mitigate the impact of flooding.
The state government also announced plans to enhance flood resilience through the construction of drainage channels, mini-bridges, and culverts, as well as the desilting and clearing of river courses across the state. These initiatives aim to minimize the risk of flooding and safeguard communities from the adverse effects of heavy rainfall.
In response to the impending rainy season, farmers have been encouraged to commence planting activities, while fish farmers are advised to harvest before the peak of the rainy season in July. Additionally, poultry farmers are cautioned against high stocking density during this period to prevent losses.
Furthermore, residents are urged to obtain drainage permits before constructing drainages to ensure proper elevation and water passage.
