Iperu Reclaims Its Heritage with Spectacular Eyo Celebration
The ancient town of Iperu witnessed a historic cultural revival as it hosted the inaugural mega carnival of the Eyo Festival, marking what many have described as a new beginning for the community.
Widely recognized in Lagos where it has attained national and international prominence, the Eyo Festival is believed to have deep historical roots in Iperu. The grand celebration therefore served as both a cultural reawakening and a bold assertion of the town’s place in the history of the festival.
The event commenced with a symbolic and deeply rooted traditional procession, as the Eyo masquerades departed from their respective family compounds and made their way to the Alaperu Palace for a private ceremony and royal blessings, underscoring the spiritual significance of the festival.
This was followed by the formal arrival of royal fathers, the Mother of the Day, Eyo ambassadors, special guests, and other dignitaries, setting the stage for the grand proceedings.
Guests were then treated to traditional music and a rich cultural welcome performance by the Apepe Cultural Group. Thereafter, traditional blessings were offered by High Chief Barrister Ifasola Saheed Opeodu, the Oluwo of Iperu Kingdom, invoking goodwill for the success of the celebration.
The gathering also observed the rendition of the National Anthem, the Ogun State Anthem, and the Iperu Anthem, reflecting a blend of national pride and cultural identity.
Delivering the welcome address, the Chairman of the Eyo Iperu Carnival, Omooba Taiwo ‘Gbenga Taiwo Owokalade, described the day as a defining moment. “What a historic date and a new beginning. Today is a date with destiny,” he declared, expressing joy at witnessing the realization of a vision that began as a simple conversation and evolved into a historic movement.
He further highlighted the collective effort behind the success of the event, noting that assembling a committed team was key to bringing the project to life.
The celebration also featured vibrant public displays, including the iconic procession of white-clad Eyo masquerades, captivating residents and visitors alike.
Speaking during an interview, Hon. (Dr) Olatunde Oladipupo Adebutu expressed delight at the revival of the festival in its place of origin. He noted that he was happy to see Eyo return to its roots and be celebrated in such a grand and befitting manner, describing the event as a significant cultural milestone.
Organizers emphasized that the initiative aims to reposition Iperu on the cultural map, drawing attention to its historical connection to Eyo. They expressed optimism that, with sustained effort and support, the festival in Iperu could gain wider recognition, much like its counterpart in Lagos.
Despite the success of the event, stakeholders acknowledged challenges such as funding, modernization, and the need for continuous community engagement, calling for greater support from government and private institutions.
Residents and visitors alike described the celebration as emotional and inspiring—a proud moment that reinforces unity, heritage, and cultural pride.
As the echoes of drums fade and the white garments settle, the people of Iperu are left with renewed hope and a pressing question: can the town reclaim its place in the global narrative of Eyo? For now, this historic celebration marks a bold and promising step forward.
