Ojikutu Urges Reps to Mandate 5% FAAN Airport Earnings for Aviation Safety
Former General Secretary of the Aviation Safety Round Table Initiative, Group Captain John Ojikutu (retd.), has urged the House of Representatives to require the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to contribute five per cent of its airport sales service charges to the general pool for aviation safety services.
Ojikutu made the proposal in a presentation submitted to the House Committee on Aviation, where he called for a comprehensive review of the sharing formula for the five per cent Ticket Sales Charge (TSC), Cargo Sales Charge (CSC) and Chartered Flights Charge (CFC).
He argued that FAAN, as an airport operator involved in commercial and non-aeronautical activities, should be included among contributors to the aviation safety funding pool.
Ojikutu also proposed changes to the existing revenue-sharing formula, recommending that the allocation should reflect factors such as personnel strength, operational responsibilities, equipment, geographical coverage and maintenance requirements of the aviation agencies.
The proposal is an appeal to lawmakers and does not represent an approved change in FAAN’s revenue obligations or the existing aviation funding formula.
