Atiku Challenges FG to Prove Link to $16bn Power Expenditure
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has challenged the Federal Government to investigate and prosecute him if it has evidence linking him to wrongdoing over the controversial power-sector expenditure associated with the Olusegun Obasanjo administration.
Atiku made the challenge in a statement issued on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu.
The former vice president said allegations concerning power-sector projects, privatisation and public assets had been raised repeatedly over the years without resulting in his prosecution. He said he was prepared to face an investigation and urged the government to present any evidence it had against him.
Atiku acknowledged that he chaired the National Council on Privatisation while serving as vice president but maintained that he did not oversee the implementation of the power project.
The controversy dates to the period of the Obasanjo administration, which left office in 2007. The power-sector expenditure was subsequently investigated by the National Assembly and has remained a subject of public debate.
Atiku also questioned the Federal Government over the management of revenues following the removal of petrol subsidy, but his claim that the power allegations were being used to divert public attention is his political position and has not been independently established.
The latest development centres on Atiku’s call for evidence and investigation, rather than any established finding that he personally misappropriated funds.
