Police Heighten Security Around Schools, NYSC Camps Over Terror Alert

The Nigeria Police Force has directed its formations nationwide to strengthen security around schools, places of worship, NYSC orientation camps and other vulnerable locations following intelligence indicating possible coordinated terrorist attacks.

The warning was contained in a police wireless communication dated September 13, 2026, issued by the Department of Operations at Force Headquarters, Abuja, with reference number CB: 0900/FDPS/DOPS/FHQ/ABJ/VOL38/68. The communication was circulated to Assistant Inspectors-General of Police overseeing Zones 1–17, Commissioners of Police, Mobile Police units, counter-terrorism formations and other specialised units.

According to the intelligence cited in the communication, there was increased mobilisation of terrorist elements for possible attacks on places of worship, learning institutions, NYSC orientation camps and other vulnerable targets. The North-East, North-West, North-Central and parts of the South-West were identified as areas requiring heightened vigilance.

The police also reportedly received intelligence about the movement of armed elements from Katsina through Kaduna towards Plateau State. In response, commanders were directed to intensify surveillance and other preventive security measures around vulnerable locations.

The alert comes as preparations continue for the 2026/2027 academic session. However, the intelligence should be understood as a security warning about a possible threat, rather than confirmation that attacks are imminent or have already occurred.

Security agencies and relevant institutions are expected to maintain vigilance and strengthen preventive measures in line with the police directive.
