Alleged cult member apprehended by police in Ogun State

Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested Ismail Afolabi, a suspected member of the Eiye Confraternity, who was found in possession of a locally made double-barrel shotgun loaded with live ammunition.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola, revealed this in a statement on Sunday, stating that the arrest followed credible intelligence.

She explained that the suspect was apprehended by the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit during a raid on the Saje area of Carwash in Abeokuta, where suspected cult members were allegedly holding a secret meeting.

“On June 27, 2025, at about 17:30 hrs, the Ogun State Police Command received credible intelligence that members of the Eiye Confraternity were holding a clandestine meeting with suspected criminal intent at the Saje Area of Carwash, Abeokuta.

Operatives from the Special Weapons and Tactics Unit swiftly mobilised to the scene.

“On arrival, one suspect, Ismail Afolabi, was found in possession of a cross-body bag containing a cut-to-size double-barrel shotgun loaded with live ammunition.

“He was apprehended while attempting to flee,” the statement read.

Odutola stated that preliminary investigations are underway and that efforts are being intensified to track down other suspects who fled the scene and are connected to the gathering.

She added, “The Ogun State Police Command is fully dedicated to eliminating cult-related violence across the state.”
