FIFA Revisits Oshoala’s Historic Seven-Goal U-20 World Cup Campaign
FIFA has revisited Asisat Oshoala’s outstanding campaign at the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada, highlighting the Nigerian forward’s seven-goal performance as one of the tournament’s standout individual displays.
Oshoala scored seven goals in six matches as Nigeria reached the final, where they lost 1-0 to Germany after extra time. Her performances earned her both the adidas Golden Boot as the tournament’s top scorer and the adidas Golden Ball as its best player. FIFA records that she remains the only African player to have won the Golden Ball at the competition.
The then-Rivers Angels forward scored once in the group stage before producing a remarkable run in the knockout rounds. She netted twice in Nigeria’s 4-1 quarter-final victory over New Zealand and scored all four goals in the 6-2 semi-final win over Korea DPR, taking her tournament tally to seven.
