Sagamu Chairman Moves to Restore Order at Awolowo Market, Warns Against Roadside Trading
The Executive Chairman of Sagamu Local Government, Ogbeni Jubril Olasile Odulate, has met with stakeholders at Awolowo Market as part of efforts to improve orderliness, sanitation and the effective management of the market and adjoining garage.
The meeting brought together the Awolowo Market Board, the Iya Oloja, Baba Oloja, members of the market executive, representatives of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), road transport stakeholders and the OGSPAM Awolowo Branch.
Addressing the stakeholders, Odulate stressed that the market and the garage serve separate purposes and must operate accordingly. He explained that the garage is designated for transport activities, while the market is meant strictly for trading, adding that all users must remain within their allocated spaces to ensure proper organisation.
The chairman also directed traders and transport operators to maintain cleanliness within and around the market environment, warning against the occupation of major roads for commercial activities. He said every form of obstruction on the roads would be removed to ensure the free flow of traffic and improve public safety.
Odulate further disclosed that shops allocated to individuals but left unoccupied would be recovered and reassigned to genuine traders in need of trading spaces. According to him, public facilities must be put to the purposes for which they were provided.
He called on market leaders, transport unions and other stakeholders to sustain cooperation, peace and discipline in the market, expressing confidence that their collective efforts would create a cleaner, safer and better organised trading environment for residents and visitors alike.
